A former Nanaimo Clippers sniper and fan favourite has scored his first NHL goal.
Sheldon Rempal scored a power-play goal Tuesday, Jan. 23, to help his Vegas Golden Knights defeat the New York Islanders by a 3-2 score at New York’s UBS Arena. Rempal’s wrist shot from the right faceoff circle went off the far-side post and in past goalie Ilya Sorokin seven minutes into the second period.
“I’m going to remember every detail about that. Just an awesome moment…” Rempal told reporters after the game. “It’s something I’ve thought about my whole life and something that I never knew was going to be obtainable, so to have it happen tonight, it’s a very special night.”
The 28-year-old has played 14 career NHL games with four different NHL teams over the past five seasons. He has played for the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL the past season and a half, and was called up to Vegas’ NHL roster earlier this month.
“For me, I just need to focus on the details…” he said. “I need to be good in the D zone, good on the wall and make smart decisions … and also, hopefully, chip in offensively at some point.”
Rempal played three season with the Clippers, the best of which was 2015-16, when he scored 59 goals and 110 points in 56 games.
